Exercise...why is it so important.

Two weeks ago I made a speech at a Toastmaster's event that I thought would be appropriate for my blog content being that it was very much in line with my one of my most important views on life. This view is that without a consistent focus and dedication to exercise, you are not living your life to its fullest potential.  Exercise is one of those things that, even though it seems like it is taking away from your life because of sacrifices you may have to make to be consistent, it is actually giving to you rather than taking away because of the numerous things it ADDS to your life.

IT ADDS CONFIDENCE
Several weeks ago I wrote about ways to gain confidence in yourself. While there are a number of different ways to do this, one of the most obvious ways is to make sure that everyday you look as good as possible.  We all have had that feeling of feeling extremely good and/or powerful when we are wearing that outfit that we know we absolutely look amazing in or when we have that fresh haircut or hairdo.  One of the ways in which we can increase this feeling is to exercise to have the physical body to look as good as possible in our clothes.  There are many clothing manufactures (i.e. Express, Gap, Zara) who don't make clothes that are in the triple X-size.  Therefore, if we desire to wear the most up to date fashion trends like Kanye or Kim Kardashian (Have they still not named their baby?  What's that about?), we would be encouraged to lose weight through exercise to do so.

IT ADDS ENERGY AND PEACE OF MIND
Many individuals main excuse about why they cannot exercise is that they do not have the energy to do so. They complain about how tired they often are when they get home from work and how there is NO WAY they can muster up the energy to make it to the gym and do anything. The ironic thing about exercise is that the more energy you actually expend to do it, the more energy you will actually have.  It seems backwards, but exercising actually increases your overall energy supply by making your body perform more efficiently and, therefore, have more energy for other things. Your body will work better throughout the course of the day and continue to recharge itself naturally, so you will not be as tired at the end of the day.  From the peace of mind standpoint, there are very few things that will allow you to work off stress the way exercise does. In life, there are so many things that are outside of our control that can affect what happens to us and if we don't have some outlet to release that psychological pressure that can build as a result of that, we can eventually blow a gasket.  Exercise allow you to physically have an outlet to release that potential stress and feel more calm as you begin or end each day.

IT ADDS TIME
Probably the most important aspect of exercise is the added time that it gives to our lives on this planet.  We are all born with so much time to spend here with our loved ones, and we owe it to them to do everything in our power to make sure that we extend that time for as long as possible.  Using a car as an analogy, your heart is like the engine of your body.  Just as a car's engine must consistently be kept up to date with the correct fluids and maintenance to make sure it functions properly, your heart has to be treated the same way with consistent exercise. This will help your body function more efficiently and have much fewer "breakdowns" or need for "replacements parts" down the road - something that I'm sure we will all appreciate as we get older.

Exercise.  While no one wants to get up when they hear that alarm clock go off at 5am or walk into the gym at 6pm in the afternoon when they already had a very long day, we have to. While these may seem like large sacrifices, you will be surprised how much actual net value you will get from this.  The extra confidence, energy, peace of mind, and time will more than pay you back in the end.  Not only will you appreciate this, but those who love you and want to be with you as long as possible will appreciate it even more.

Taking "Baby Steps" - The Importance of Thinking Small to Think Big

I have often seen individuals in life who desire to do amazing things.  They come up with these grandiose plans of how to be successful and then begin to pursue this dream over the course of time.  What often happens, however, is they end up falling flat on their face as they begin to become overwhelmed with the multitude of different endeavors that they have taken on to achieve their goal.  While ultimately, we should push ourselves to achieve great goals by stretching our focus and desire, one of the greatest things that I have learned help one to "get moving" towards a goal is to not ALWAYS think so big.  I read Donald Trump's "Think Big" book many years ago and agree with many of his beliefs and advice.  However, one should not forget the tremendous advantages that "thinking small" provides us as we work towards our large goals. The benefits of thinking small are:

THINKING SMALL PREVENTS YOU FROM MISSING "MINOR" DETAILS
Anyone who has ever planned a large event will tell you that one of the things that can turn an event from an absolute masterpiece into a total disaster are the small, seemingly insignificant things that will be overlooked in the midst of tackling the big problems - Forgetting to make sure to order backup food in the event more people show up than anticipated;  not having a solid contingency plan if there are any hiccups with the participants or workers; not anticipating that you will need overflow parking in the event more people attend than originally projected.  All of these small things can be an event killer and can easily be prevented by starting small with the planning of anything major.  The same can be said for planning out the strategy for your business or endeavor.  By starting with the small things first, you will ensure that you don't forget some legal document that must be filed on your behalf or some significant aspect of a vacation trip that might be forgotten as an afterthought if you don't take the time to start with the small things first.

THINKING SMALL IS OFTEN MORE REALISTIC AND EASILY ACCEPTED BY OTHERS
While it would be nice to present your idea to a group of angel investors and ask for a million dollar loan to get your start-up off the ground, what is more likely, and somewhat easier to accomplish, however, would be to create a smaller prototype of what you desire to do and start with less money upfront.  When attempting to procure the support of others, if you begin your discussion with how your new social media site is going to be the largest thing since Facebook and have a billion users in less than a year, they will probably look at you as a little nutty and not think you are someone with whom they would desire to invest their money.  However, if you give a more practical solution that is focused on a more realistic outcome (thousands of local users as opposed to billions of world users that is focused on a more niche' market), you will stand a much better chance of getting the support you need from others who will see your goals as more realistic -which in turn will increase the chances they will receive a positive return on their investment.

THINKING SMALL WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO GET MOVING
Many people have plans of such momentous size that they often become paralyzed with not being sure where to start.  Their end-game of what they desire to accomplish doesn't give them any true sense of how to get started.  By taking a minute to break down the endeavor into smaller, more manageable steps, one will have a much better chance of actually moving in the right direction to achieve his/her goals. If you have a dream of opening up your own bakery, start taking one day of the week to begin working on your baking skills. If you want to open up your own night club, start reading a book on how to open up a night club. It is these small things that will get you moving in a positive direction that will push you forward to your ultimate dreams.

I often think of how little babies begin life not being able to move in any manner and eventually grow from lying around to crawling to taking those first steps to walking to running around the world. When thinking about how you will achieve your life dreams, remember to take "baby steps" to keep one foot in front of the other until you can eventually get your stride right to sprint to your life's desire.

Diversifying your Friend Portfolio

In life, we meet so many different types of people through our day to day activities that it often surprises me how many people spend the majority of their time with the same exact people or the same types of people.  I have found that this is the case because many people are comfortable with their current friends and don't desire to go through the work of learning and understanding new people in their lives.  However, there are tremendous benefits gained by not only allowing new friends to come into your life, but also actually seeking and cultivating relationships with different types of people who cross your path.

THEY WILL GIVE YOU A BETTER APPRECIATION FOR OTHERS
We can all have a tendency to live in our own bubble of a world.  We know the people who we grew up or went to college with, but we rarely find ourselves stepping out of these boundaries of comfort. And even when we desire to make a new friend, they are very much a carbon copy of our existing friend base.  What diversifying your friend portfolio will do is allow you to have a better appreciation of all the different types of people in the world and how they think.  When you spend time with someone who is not exactly like you and understand their background and how they came to the philosophy by which they live or accomplished the things they have, you will have a greater understanding of the differences in all of us. At the same time, however, you will also get a better appreciation of how much we are all very alike at the core.  We live in a world in which diversity is becoming the new mainstream way of society and by allowing yourself to integrate and learn more about others who are not like you now, you are giving yourself a great competitive advantage in life and work.

YOU WILL LIVE A MUCH RICHER, INTERESTING LIFE
If you ever pay attention to The Most Interesting Man in the World commercials, one of the things that is hinted at implicitly is that he has a great appreciation for many different cultures. While one has to think that his general heritage is that of Hispanic in some nature, all of his adventures take places with a multitude of different types of people.  By befriending those who are different from our normal circle, we will increase the chances that we will participate is some new and exciting activity that we never would have received the chance had we not taken the chance to step outside of our comfort zone and try something different.  While life is about many things, one of the most important things is to be able to look back at it with fond memories and no regret.  By experiencing a diverse portfolio of activities from your diverse friends, you will have a plethora of different memories to pull from as you age and will be a much better conversationalist for others to enjoy...i.e. the most interesting man in the world.

YOU WILL HAVE A MUCH MORE DIVERSE APPROACH TO LIFE
One of the great byproducts of befriending those who are not like you is that you will have the ability to truly understanding how they think.  Whether it is a philosophy they acquired from their upbringing as a child, the part of the world in which they lived, or the traditional teachings from their heritage or religion, there will probably be a number of different lessons that you can glean from them to apply to your life.  I've always said that while no one group has it all right, if you are able to pull a little nugget from every one, you often have a much better chance of solving problems and overcoming different challenges that we all face life, regardless of race, creed, or sexual orientation.

It has always been my opinion that people are what make this world a great place.  How much better is a life enjoyed by individuals who make it a point to seek out, learn, and befriend all the different types of people in our world to live a life of variety and excitement.  While Drake may sound right when he says, "No new friends," unfortunately, he could be missing out on some great people and an EVEN BETTER life.

Overcoming Lack of Confidence

I was at a networking event recently and made a very interesting observation.  Many of the individuals there only stayed in their small groups and very seldom spoke to anyone outside of it. I thought this was funny as this was an event that encouraged individuals to get to know new people, but I could understand the crux of it.  Many years ago, when I began the networking scene, I remember always feeling uncomfortable going up to new people whom I didn't know and trying to engage in some type of conversation.  I wasn't exactly sure why this was the case but I eventually came to the realization that it was because of a lack of confidence.  It has been said that as many of 85% of the population has experienced lack of confidence for some reason in their lives. Often, this lack of confidence is unfounded on anything substantial and can easily be overcome with a paradigm shift of how one thinks about him/herself and one's abilities. Other times, there may be something there that absolutely needs to be addressed first to allow this person to truly feel confident in all situations.  Either way, here are three tips that can help you overcome your lack of confidence demon for good.

ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IS THE CASE AND IT IS A PROBLEM
This is usually the step that most people never make.  Many people will say to themselves that they are shy or "just don't know what to do/say in certain situations" which is great because they recognize that this is true.  The connection that most people don't make, however, is to acknowledge that THIS IS A PROBLEM. They feel because many people perhaps feels this way, that they are normal and shouldn't worry about it.  In a sense, they are very right.  However, to have the opportunity to life a life of fulfillment, excitement, and success, having a handicap such as this can be very crippling.  How many awesome people may you have missed out on in your life because you were too afraid to speak to them?  How many opportunities to share great ideas at work and get subsequent praise/acknowledgement for them have you let slipped through your fingers because you were too afraid to speak up at a meeting?  We often don't think of what we are losing out in on life by NOT taking action, but it is often way more than that which we lose by taking action.  The first step is realizing that this feeling does hold us back from success and we have to fight it if we truly desire to achieve what we want in life.

IDENTIFY THE REASON(S) BEHIND IT
This is a very important point because, as I alluded to in the introduction to this week's writing, there are generally two reasons for a lack of confidence.  There is a psychological reason that affects all of us from time to time in which we just don't feel that we are good enough for whatever reason.  This could be driven from some experience in your past in which you were made to feel less than equal to others.  It could be from a rough childhood in which you may have been teased or picked on as a kid.  This is often a difficult one to combat, but it can be overcome with consistent positives affirmations in which you tell yourself the past does not apply to today.  It's very easy to let something that occurred to us when we were 5 affect how we react in a situation when we are 35, and the only way to prevent this is to continually fight those psychological barriers that try to stay with us for so long.  The other side of the coin is that their are actual deficiencies that we possess that make us feel less than confident in certain situations.  We may be overweight and think the opposite sex isn't attracted to us. We may not be as eloquent in front of others and are afraid to share our ideas because we may appear unintelligent.  These causes for lack of confidence need to be identified as well and then you have to work to fix them.  There is truth to the fact that being overweight can cause you to appear less attractive to the opposite sex. You CAN overcome this with a psychological paradigm shift, but the more lasting and healthier way to overcome this is to get your butt in the gym and start exercising and eating right.  You can be bold and share your ideas in any way you feel natural or you can work to improve your vocabulary and presentation skills through continuous reading and by joining organizations such as Toastmasters.  Fix the reason for the lack of confidence and you will have a much better chance of it going AND staying away.

SLOWLY, SYSTEMATICALLY DECREASE THE EFFECTS OF IT
The adage, "Rome wasn't built in a day" is perfect for the mentality you must take to attack this situation.  For many of us, we have had low confidence issues for years and have just ignored it or not acknowledged it was a problem.  It would be silly to think we could overcome something that has plagued us for decades in three weeks.  To really be able to have a lasting improvement in our life in this area, we must development a systematic plan that we will follow to make incremental improvements in the areas in which we lack confidence.  If we have a fear of talking to the opposite sex, we have to consistently push ourselves to be uncomfortable and start conversations when presented.  If we get nervous when speaking in front of crowds, we could join an organization like Toastmasters that will help us improve in this area.  If we have a psychological confidence problem, we should consistently affirm all the positive attributes we have and push ourselves to step outside of our comfort zone to do those things that we know of which we have the ability.

Understand, there will be times in which you will fumble, make mistakes, and get shot down. It's okay.  It's part of the process.  Tony Hawk, famous X-gamer, fell down hundreds of times before he was able to do some of the most amazing things you've ever seen anyone do on a skateboard/bike.  By falling down sometimes, you are are able to learn how to do it better the next time. With time, you'll be surprised how much better you will become if you stay committed to pushing yourself to overcome your fears to have the chance to experience the world for all it has to offer.

Stress...Don't Let it Ruin Your Life

As so often is the case, the person who is the most equipped to discuss a topic in detail is the individual who has suffered through it before.  This week’s blog holds a personal place in my heart as I was a major victim of it about five years ago.  I was lucky that I was able to go through and overcome this at a young age to make the quality of the rest of my life so much better, as I live through the various ups and down of the world.  However, there are a number of people who never truly get a grasp on stress and live lives of utter terror as they attempt to cope with the day to day events of their lives.  I write this week’s blog to all of those people who can’t sleep at night and wake up every morning dreading the next day.  To these people, I simply say, “CHILL OUT.” Some people accept stress as a natural part of life, and to many people, it is. However, it doesn't HAVE to be.  We have the ability to control how stress affects our lives and if you desire to live a life of happiness, you have to make sure to not let this overcome your world.  There are a few simple truths that, if you internalize and accept them, you will have a much better view and handle on stress in your life.

STRESS IS SELF CREATED AND CAN BE CONTROLLED
The concept of stress is purely psychological as opposed to an actual physical malady on our bodies.  Just as some individuals experience extreme fear when flying while others are fine, some people are completely stressed out in certain situations while others have no feeling of stress at all. Therefore, we have the ability to overcome feelings of stress and despair in our lives by refusing to allow this feeling to control us.  By understanding that we create and, therefore, control stress, we will be better able to ignore any feelings of anxiety that may come over us in times of high pressure situations.  Navy Seals are trained to be able to keep their heart rate and stress level at even keel even in the most extreme situations. By practicing to stay calm when feelings of stress come upon us, we can overcome this feeling to the point that it will eventually disappear.

HAVE A GLASS HALF FULL MENTALITY - MAKE IT A WIN/WIN
Often, we become so stressed when we think about the negative outcomes of some event in our lives that we don't take a minute to think about the positive side of these occurrences   I have learned that accepting something not going your way by thinking about how you can make a positive out of it allows you to much better deal with the day to day uncertainty of which way it could go.  For example, while you may hate that you may be breaking up with your significant other and wish that you could be with him/her forever, one bright side of that is being able to enjoy the single life for a little bit.  (Anyone who knows me knows I've enjoyed this for a while .)  Or, while you may desire to get a promotion that would put you in another pay category at work, if you don't get it, you will have fewer commitments for work and, therefore, will have time to take those salsa classes that you always wanted.  You could also use the disappointment of not getting it as a wake-up call to rededicate yourself to improving those things that held you back from the promotion.  By always spinning what could be positive from a negative outcome, we take away the power of stress to overrun our minds as we focus on how the outcome could be a win/win in the long run.

IT'S HONESTLY JUST NOT THAT SERIOUS
I say this all the time when I speak to people who are so stressed out about work and life and feel that the world is coming down on them.  If you're not a brain surgeon, police officer, or solider, (along with a few other professions), there are very few things that should really be that big of a deal at the end of the day.  The simple question I always ask people is will anybody DIE if things don't turn out your way.  If the answer to this question is NO (which it is 99% of the time), then you should just relax and let the chips fall where they may.  As little kids, remember how silly we were when we used to stress about forgetting our homework for class?  Or as teenagers, remember how stressed we would become when we were worried about matching our outfit to perfection?  These things seem silly now, but it is no different than people who stress about every little thing in their world. As humans, we can only control so much in life.  If you work hard, put in the time, and focus on doing the right things, don't stress about the outcome. Just know that you are doing everything you can to have things go your way and enjoy life.  It's really just that simple.

It has been reported that 43% of adults suffer adverse health effects from stress, while anywhere from 75%-90% of all doctors visits are for stress-related ailments or complaints.  By utilizing the simple tips above, you can cope with and manage stressful situations better when it may arise, while living a much better quality of life at the same time.

The Boston Tragedy...What We Can Learn From it.

While contemplating this week's post, I thought about a number of different things on which to focus.  As with most people this week, the Boston Bombing was heavy on my mind, as I thought about all the innocent people who lost their lives along with those whose lives were forever changed with the injuries they suffered.  From this, I thought about how we often forget how amazingly lucky we all are to be able to see another day and have all of our faculties and bodily functions for our use.  I know I am guilty of sometimes feeling sorry for myself because everything doesn't go as perfectly as I had planned or hoped.  While there is really nothing good that could come from such a tragedy, one of the great side effects of it is that it reminds us all how precious every day is and that tomorrow is never promised.  From this, I thought of several small things that we should always do to not forget this truth and daily keep the right perspective on life.

Tell your loved ones you love them as much as possible.
My sister and my mother are by far the most important women in my life.  We talk fairly often during the course of the week/month and sometimes may tend to bump heads about certain things.  The one thing that we always try to do, however, (regardless of how we may feel about a conversation that may not have pleased either of us) is to end the call with an "I love you." Always telling those you care you about that you love them at every opportunity will make the other person feel good and ensure that they know how special they are to you.  We have all heard of the tragic story of someone saying something completely hurtful to someone in anger haphazardly, thinking they will have the chance to apologize later, only to never get the chance as some tragedy occurs that takes this person from them.  Don't be one of those stories.

Look at the glass as half full
I shared a post earlier this week about how they way we view a situation can have an tremendous impact on how we approach it and the overall outcome.  By accepting a glass half full approach, we give ourselves a much better chance of improving a situation rather than if we approach it negatively.  However, a great by-product of such a view is that it allows us to truly appreciate the good things that we currently have in life as opposed to harping on the negative things that may occur from time to time.  By thinking about how much more difficult others have it, we will be able to face the day with happiness and encouragement that we are still blessed in light of imperfect situations.

Help others
During the Boston bombing, one of the images that was so readily seared into my mind was the number of people who responded to the incident with absolute courage, with no regard for themselves to do everything they could to help those who were injured. Not knowing if there was a third bomb that was waiting to be detonated, these people raced back to the site of the explosion to aid others in need.  This was also the scene during 9/11 when so many of the firefighters and policeman lost their lives running into the building to help others out.  This is one of the things in life that will make our lives so much richer when it is all said and done.  We can try to be selfish and focus only on ourselves, but to truly live a life that has a purpose, we have to consistently help others less fortunate to make sure that we are making a lasting impression on the world while remembering our great blessings at the same time.  This always pays off in the long run because you never know when you may be the one on the other end needing the help...

Communication - The Great Differentiator

It has been said that studies show that more people are afraid of public speaking than they are of death.  This seems strange to me because I guarantee if you gave anyone a choice of speaking in front of a 100 people for five minutes or taking a bullet to the head, I'm sure what any sane person would pick. At any rate, this study does bring to the forefront the fear that so many individuals have of speaking in front of a crowd.  I'm sure many of us have experienced that intense pressure the comes in our chest as we anticipate having to give a speech or respond to a question in front of a large group.  It is for this reason that many individuals never speak up in class even though they have the right answer or share their opinions at work in meetings even though they came up with the answer internally well before the group pieced it together.  The importance of good communication skills is paramount on so many levels that one will give himself or herself a great competitive advantage by working to improve this as much as possible.  So where do you start?  There are only a few small steps that will help you be well on your way to becoming an eloquent communicator to take your life and career to the next level.

READ
This seems counterintiutive since we are discussing how to become a better communicator.  Many would ask what does reading have to do with being able to speak well.  And this is the reason that many people cannot do it.  Reading is one of the best ways to get a sense of the numerous ways in which something can be communicated.  Having a well-rounded vocabulary is one of the characterstics of good communicators, as they will have the correct turn of phrase that wiil exactly convey the message or point they were trying to share.  By reading consistently, you will be able to more quickly process the different ways to create a message and will, therefore, be better on your feet at responding to things in a more succinct and clear manner.  By reading how others share their ideas in a well-structured format, you will have a better sense of how to do so as well when asked a question that requires you to state your views in a manner that is easily digestable by others...which is what many of us look for in a well-written book.

FIGHT FEAR
This is probably the biggest thing that holds back so many people.  What you will find is that someone will sit in a company meeting for 20 minutes debating to say something and then kick themselves when it is said by a senior colleage who gets credit for a GREAT idea.  The only way to get good at doing something is to do it.  It sounds simple but it is rarely followed. Even though the first couple of times might be somewhat painful, the only way to get better at speaking on your feet and being a competent, clear communicator is to fight the natural fear that we all may have at doing this and speak up at EVERY REASONABLE chance you get.  This doesn't mean "over"-communicate every idea that flies through your head, but it does mean to not allow a good idea to go unsaid. If you have a good thought and have given it a quick brain filter test for relevence, pragmatism, and overall potential effectiveness, share it with the group.  The first few times your words may not come out as eloquent as you may like, but you will only get better by seizing these opportunites to speak up to share your views.  The only way to conquer fear is to face it.  Don't ever let it hold you back.

PRACTICE
In contrast to the opinion of Allen Iverson, practice is actually the most important thing you can do to be successful in many things in life, and your ability to communicate is no different.  The only way to be able to have the correct tone, volume, timing, etc. when speaking in front of others is to practice this consistently when no one or few people are around.  Many times, we may hear someone give a great speech and think how "naturally" good they are in front of others.  What we don't see are the numerous hours that this indivdual has spent practing and practicing that speech to make sure that it's flawless when they deliver it.  By joining organization such as Toastmasters, one has the ability to consistently work on his/her craft to be more comfortable in almost any situation in life that requires impromptu or prepared communication ability.

In today's society, good communication skills are not only for someone who desires to be a public speaker, but also for anyone who desires to gain a competitive advantage in life.  If you have a job in which you have to speak to anybody for any reason, having the ability to effectively communicate will separate you from the masses who fear it dramatically.  I'm not 100 percent sure, but I'm guessing it's a little easier than dying.
